E-bibliotekar
A system for school libraries in Republika Srpska. Designed, built, deployed and supported entirely in house.
The situation
Most school libraries in the region still keep their holdings in a paper inventory book. There is no library module built for schools here, and the national COBISS system does not cover them. Roughly four in five schools employ a full time librarian who is responsible for statutory reporting they currently assemble by hand.
What it does
Cataloguing of books and periodicals, membership records, lending for both material types, and the two statutory statistics reports a school librarian has to produce each year: one for the regional parent library, one for the statistics bureau. The reporting is the part that saves real days of work.
Version one
A desktop application talking to a hosted database, in daily use in a secondary school. It proved the workflow was right and showed exactly where the desktop architecture would stop scaling: one machine, one school, no remote access, and a database schema that assumed a single tenant.
The rebuild
The current version moves to a multi tenant web architecture with separate dashboards for administrators and librarians, so one deployment can serve many schools rather than one machine serving one. Multi language support is in the first release rather than bolted on later, because the system is meant to work across all of Bosnia and Herzegovina, not one entity.
Data migration from version one runs through a validation tool that reports fatal, warning and informational findings against the old database before anything is written. Migrating a decade of hand entered records without that step is how you silently lose a catalogue.
Why it is on this page
Client work has confidentiality attached to it. This does not. It is the clearest available evidence of what we do end to end: research the domain, write the spec, build the back end and the front end, migrate the old data, deploy it, and support the people using it.
